See Why Sustainable Eating Starts Locally
At Valley Isle Kombucha, we hold sustainability as a core value and locally source organic produce for our kombucha. Not only are Maui-grown fruits so much healthier than the imported stuff, they are also a way to help build a better, more sustainable island community. By “voting with our dollar” and sourcing from Maui farmers, we help support the idea that sustainable eating starts locally.
Local Farms Cause Less Planetary Harm
Large farms that import produce to the island generally grow hybrids and genetically-modified crops to ensure the shelf life required to get these products safely to your table. These unsustainable farming methods, not to mention transportation costs, place a greater burden on the environment. This is especially the case with many of our tropical fruit blends, which would require importing either all the way from Florida, or internationally from South America.
Island-grown foods, on the other hand, require no pesticides, harmful farming practices or transportation. Instead, local farms depend on working with the land by hand, and using sustainable island farming practices.
Local Farms Build Community
The mainland has many wonderful organic farms and co-ops, but the cost and quality doesn’t make up for the convenience. Buying local helps us support our community, and build special relationship with local farmers. Buying local also allows you to ask questions, know where your food comes from and how it is grown. You can find out if local farming methods prove sustainable — even see it for yourself.
Libby Mills, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says, “Getting to know the people producing your food is like getting to know a neighbor. Through this relationship we can know exactly how the food we eat is produced.”
Sustainable Eating Starts Locally
With so much of our food arriving from thousands of miles away, we believe a little local eating makes a big difference. Valley Isle Kombucha uses locally-sourced organic produce for our kombucha blends. We know our farmers, their farming methods and where the food comes from. It’s our way of giving everyone an authentic “taste of Hawaii,” and supporting sustainability too!
