Healthy Hawaii Fruits Everyone Should Know About

March 30, 2017

You can find wonderful tropical fruits on Hawaii like banana, pineapple and mango, but did you know there are many other exotic fruits too? Here are some healthy Hawaii fruits everyone should know about, whether living here or just visiting.

Lilikoi

Also known as “passion fruit,” lilikoi is a small, oval-shaped fruit that matures yellow, orange or purple. Its pulpy interior is full of edible seeds and can be eaten raw or juiced. Tart and flavorful with a wonderful taste and smell, lilikoi is both delicious and healthy. Lilikoi is low in calories and packed with nutrients including vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and potassium.

Papaya

Commonly seen growing throughout the islands, papaya is a melon-like fruit that’s tasty, healthy and easy to find. It’s one of few tropical fruits that’s always in season. The flesh inside can be pink, orange, yellow or a combination. While not as sweet as other tropical fruits, papaya has a delectably smooth texture, and is delicious when hollowed out and eaten with a splash of lime juice, and makes a wonderful addition to a light breakfast. Papaya is rich in papain, an enzyme that helps the body break down protein. It’s so effective, you can find papaya supplements to help improve digestion.

Lychee

One of Hawaii’s lesser-known fruits, lychee is a delicious fruit originating in China. It grows on a huge tree, which is capable of producing hundreds of the red fruits every season. To eat, you simply peel off the thin red skin and eat the sweet white flesh (don’t eat the seed in the center). You can also juice lychee to add to tropical juice blends. The taste of lychee is sort like a super sweet, sugary grape, but it is far more nutritious. Lychee is an excellent source of antioxidants and potassium, and it contains more vitamin C than a similar-sized lemon or orange.

Jackfruit

Another unusual Hawaii fruit is the jackfruit. This unusual-looking fruit is packed with flavor and nutrients. If you haven’t tried jackfruit before, the taste is almost exactly like Juicy Fruit gum. Jackfruit is a rich source of vitamin A, phytonutrients, flavonoids, fiber, electrolytes, fat and protein.

Of course, there are many other equally exotic fruits grown on Hawaii, like rambutan, breadfruit, cherimoya and dragon fruit. Which ones are your favorite?
