August 22, 2019

The name “blood orange” may sound unappetizing, but don’t worry. It actually has a taste and texture similar to traditional oranges. The fruit gets its name from the dark orange and red coloring inside. Unlike oranges that are available year-round, the blood orange fruit has a very specific season. Before you go out in search of blood oranges, there are some things that you should know.

1. Different varieties

The most famous variety of blood orange is the Sicilian red-orange. There are four other common varieties. The Moro is deep red and slightly bitter. Ruby Blood is another variation but is more pink than red. Sanguinello is popular in Spain, is sweet, has red streaks and few seeds. The Tarocco is very sweet and easy to peel.

Despite the many varieties, you probably won’t get a choice at the store. Also, remember that not all blood oranges are deep red in color.

2. Use

There are many options when it comes to eating this fruit. Make sure to eat the white pith, which supplies a good amount of fiber. You can use the fruit in fruit salads or salsa. Another great use is to juice it to replace your usual morning drink. Citrus fruits can offer some great health benefits.

3. Color

The red color comes from the antioxidant, anthocyanin. The depth of the red color depends on the season, when harvested and which variety of fruit.

4. Taste

Blood oranges are generally sweeter than traditional oranges.

How to choose and the best time to buy

Blood oranges are in season from December through May. Certain varieties have specific time frames within the season. Moros are available from December through March and Taroccos are available from January through May.
