3 Oahu Locally Grown Melons That Will Make Your Taste Buds Sing

March 21, 2019

Oahu’s lush environment makes it the perfect place to grow fruits. A few tropical fruits grown on Oahu are melons. Hawaii’s melons are the envy of the rest of the world. These fruits are flavorful and good for you. Keep reading to learn about Oahu’s locally grown melons!

Watermelon

Oahu is home to a few variations of watermelon. There are Thai, yellow, and seedless watermelons. Along with being an amazing base for juices, watermelons have many health benefits. Potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C are nutrients watermelons provide. They will also keep you hydrated. Watermelons are 90% water! Lycopene is what gives watermelon its red color. In addition to giving fruits color, it’s known to improve heart health and prevent cancer. Oahu’s watermelons are sweet and refreshing. What’s not to love?

Honeydew

Another locally grown melon is honeydew. Unlike watermelon, honeydew’s sweet flavor is less tart. Its green flesh is hardy. This makes it a great snack and delicious in a fruit salad. Like watermelon, it’s full of vitamins and minerals. On top of that, honeydew is a great source of fiber. Honeydew’s fiber aids in digestion and blood sugar control.

Cantaloupe

Similar in shape and texture to honeydew, another locally grown fruit is cantaloupe. Cantaloupe makes mouths water from its sweet, earthy smell. Its flavor makes it pair well with savory snacks. Like other melons, cantaloupe contains water and vitamins. Beta carotene gives cantaloupe its orange color. It also supports eye health. In fact, cantaloupe has more beta carotene than mangoes and oranges. This makes cantaloupe comparable to carrots!
